Electrical Equipment Assessments (FFPA)

Image of an engineer performing an electrical equipment assessment in a factory setting.

Many industrial sites continue to operate explosion-protected electrical equipment that was installed before today's ATEX certification requirements or where certification records have been lost over time. Replacing that equipment isn't always necessary.

Vital Ex Engineering carries out Fitness for Purpose Assessments (FFPAs) to determine whether existing electrical equipment can continue to operate safely within hazardous areas. Our independent engineering assessments provide the technical evidence needed to support continued operation while helping organisations meet their DSEAR and ATEX obligations.

When is an FFPA required?

A Fitness for Purpose Assessment may be appropriate where:

  • Equipment was installed before current ATEX requirements
  • Certification plates are missing, damaged or illegible
  • Original documentation has been lost
  • Equipment has been modified or repaired
  • Imported equipment has uncertain certification
  • Existing installations require technical justification for continued operation
  • Rather than replacing equipment unnecessarily, an FFPA provides an evidence-based assessment of whether it remains suitable for its intended service.

What does the assessment involve?

Our consultants carry out a structured engineering review, considering:

  • Equipment design and construction, reviewing electrical safety.
  • Explosion protection method
  • Installation quality
  • Physical condition
  • Intended operating duty
  • Available certification and documentation
  • Compliance with relevant standards and fitness for purpose assessments
  • Where appropriate, additional inspection or testing may also be undertaken.

Benefits of the FFPA

Fitness for Purpose Assessments can help you:

  • Demonstrate DSEAR compliance
  • Support ATEX inspection records
  • Justify the continued use of legacy equipment
  • Reduce unnecessary equipment replacement costs
  • Improve confidence in ageing installations and electrical safety
  • Provide documented engineering evidence for regulators and auditors

Why choose Vital Ex for your specialist electrical equipment assessment?

We combine practical hazardous area experience with an in-depth understanding of international explosion protection standards, electrical safety, fitness for purpose assessments.

Every assessment is independent, technically robust and tailored to the specific operating conditions of your site, giving you confidence that engineering decisions are based on sound technical evidence rather than assumptions.
